Many jobs need the same text over and over, but with each copy on a line of its own. A column of identical cells. A list of test entries. A set of lines to drop into a configuration file. This line repeater handles exactly that: it writes your text again and again with a line break between every copy.
Quick start
Type or paste your text into the top box. Choose how many lines you want. The output updates instantly, with one copy per line, and you can copy it with one click. The separator is already set to New line, so there’s nothing else to do for the basic case.
Handy variations
Blank line between copies. Switch the separator to Blank line when you want paragraphs rather than a tight list. It’s useful for drafting sample content where each repeat should be visually separate.
Numbered lines. Turn on numbering to get 1. Your text, 2. Your text, and so on. Change the format to suit: Row {n}: , #{n} , or item_{n}=. You can also pick the starting number, which is handy when you’re adding to an existing list.
Prefix and suffix. Wrapping each line is a quick way to build code-ready output. Add " before and ", after to create quoted entries for an array, or INSERT INTO t VALUES (' before and '); after to get a pile of sample SQL statements.
Repeat each line separately. If you paste several lines, you can have each repeated in turn. Three lines with a count of two produces line one twice, line two twice, line three twice. That’s a quick way to create a list in which each item appears a set number of times, for example when you need to simulate duplicate records for a test.
Common uses
- Spreadsheet columns. Paste the result into one column and every line fills a row. It’s faster than dragging a fill handle when you want a very specific number of rows. Our guide to repeating text in Excel and Google Sheets covers other methods too.
- Test data for developers. Sample usernames, product names or log messages in bulk.
- Printing practice sheets. A word or sentence on every line for handwriting or typing drills.
- Filler for layouts. Designers fill lists and tables to check spacing and overflow.
- Configuration and scripting. Generating repeated blocks for config files, SQL or markup.
Tidying the result
When you paste text from the tool into another app, you may notice a trailing blank line. That usually comes from a line break at the end of your input. Press backspace once in the input box to remove it.
Once you have your lines you can keep working on them. Remove accidental repeats with remove duplicate lines, reorder them with sort lines, add quotes or commas with add text to each line, or squash them into a single paragraph with remove line breaks. The main text repeater page has the full range of options, such as custom separators and word-by-word repeating.
How big can it get?
You can repeat up to 100,000 times, as long as the result stays under two million characters. That’s more than most people will ever need, and it keeps your browser responsive. If you hit the cap, the tool tells you.
Numbering and measuring the result
To put numbers on lines you already have, add line numbers gives you control over the start, the separator and zero padding. If you are generating rows to test a form, the random name generator makes realistic values that do not repeat, and filter lines trims a long list down to the rows that match a keyword.
